Wisconsin The Badger State The nickname originated form the lead miners during the 1830s; who worked in the Glena lead mines. The miners lived in temporary caves cut in the hillsides. The caves were described as badger dens and the miners badgers. Eventually the nickname was applied to all people of Wisconsin and the badger was adopted as the state animal in 1957. State Symbols: Morning Dove; Wood violet; Cranberry; and Sugar Maple.
